Week 2 Story: The Rakshasis' Fall

Many centuries ago, in a small town near the Arabian Sea there was a group of shapeshifting female goblins also known as "rakshasis" who devoured every human they encountered. The female goblins especially enjoyed men, because they were able to trick men into marrying them, and thus devour them.

One day there was a tumultuous storm as a group of men were sailing on the Arabian Sea. The men's ship was destroyed due to the terrible winds and pelting rain. Some men drowned within the sea, while other men were washed up on the shore, unluckily escaping their death. As the men washed up on shore, they were not far from the town with the shapeshifting female goblins.

The female goblins were finishing up their last meal, human fingers dipped in a skull bowl of human brain. However, the female goblins were still quite hungry, new fresh human meat was the only thing that would appease their hunger.

The goblins chanted, "More, more, we want more.
"Tasty, tasty give us more gore."

One goblin went to the crowd of female goblins stating that she saw a group of men washed up on the coast that needed shelter and food. The female goblins had plenty of food such as fruit and bread, yet the only thing that satisfied their appetite was human flesh. Thus, the goblins began scheming.

As the men woke up on the shore from the terrible storm, they noticed a group of beautiful ladies walking towards them. They were the most gorgeous ladies they have feasted their eyes upon. The group of ladies helped bandage the injured men, gave the men plenty of food, and housed the men for the men had no where else to go since their ship was destroyed. A day later the ladies convinced the men to marry them.

One morning as one of the men began eating breakfast he was sitting talking to his newly wed wife. Unfortunately, or should I say fortunately for him he accidentally spilled some water on the arm of his wife. She began shrieking in fear and pain because everyone knows goblins have much fear of water. He began apologizing to his wife, for he just thought he frightened her. He then planned to take his newly wed wife to the coast where he and his men washed up on shore. As he and his wife walked to the shore, he thought it would be fun to splash some sea water on his wife. He went to the edge of the coast, went into the Arabian Ocean and splashed water on his wife. She again shrieked but this time he saw her face transform into the hideous female goblin she was, but she quickly changed back hoping he did not notice. The man kept his cool, for he knew he had to tell his other men that the ladies were more than likely crafty goblins seeking to eat them.

Later that day, the man called for a meeting to meet with his other men and discussed the possibility of their wives being goblins. Yet, all the men laughed and did not believe him. There was no way to convince the men that the wives were goblins; therefore, he began scheming because he did not want to see his men die. He then told his men he would be hosting a boat party that evening in which all their wives were invited as well.

That evening the men and their wives arrived to the boat party. The wives seemed squeamish but they were promised that they would not get wet and would be on the boat the entire time. However, the men and their wives did not realize that the ship would be set on fire. While everyone was enjoying the view from the ship, a fire was started on the boat and it quickly spread. It was too late to put out the fire for it was getting too large. Thus, the husbands took their wives and jumped overboard. The wives feared and some refused to jump. As the men jumped with their wives they saw their wives shapeshift into goblins as they screamed in pain and fear of the water.

They screamed, "The pain, the pain"
"We will all die in vain"

The female goblins died from either the fire on the boat or the pain the water inflicted on them.
The group of men apologized and thanked the man for showing them that they were truly married to goblins.

Authors Note and Bibliography: I was inspired by the story "Goblin House", written by H. D. W. Rouse. I wanted to use the same female goblins that were used in the original story while also not naming any of the characters. I also sought to keep out the part of the story with the Fairy saving the men, rather I wanted at least one man to try to trick the female goblins. One aspect of the original story I loved was the rhyming from the female goblins, so I sought to keep the rhyming aspect similar,

  1. Hey Carlo! Your opening sentence includes the phrase "shapeshifting female goblins" this brings a lot of things to my imagination and sounds horrifying! I love it. The goblins meal, human fingers dipped in a skull bowl of human brains, is about the most horrifying and disgusting meal imaginable, good job describing it. Also just a heads up to anyone who is told they can get onto a boat without getting wet, you're being lied to! I've gotten wet every time I've been on a boat.

  2. Hi Carlo,

Your story was so captivating! I love the adjectives you used to convey such vivid imagery. I thought it was a great choice to make at least one of the men see through the female goblin's scheme. His plan to expose the female goblins was a genius plan. I did not anticipated that. I also loved that you kept the rhyming verse. It made the story more mystical in a sense. Overall, I enjoyed your story.
